Osyka Elementary Learns Recycling with Myrtle the Turtle

On Friday, February 6, 2026, MDOT District 7 Litter Prevention Coordinator Mrs. Daphne Felder Scott, along with Pike County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Damian Gatlin, visited Osyka Elementary School for a meaningful and engaging day of learning. Mrs. Scott spoke with Pre-K, Kindergarten, and 2nd-grade students about the importance of recycling and keeping Mississippi clean and beautiful. Through interactive discussion, music, and storytelling, students learned how litter impacts the environment and harms animals. The students joyfully sang along to the message, “If you see a piece of trash, pick it up,” reinforcing simple actions they can take every day to help protect their community. Her presentation featured her beloved program character, “Myrtle the Turtle” 🐢, which helped students connect environmental responsibility to real-life choices. Mrs. Scott’s enthusiasm and passion for clean, healthy environments truly inspired students to take pride in caring for their school, neighborhood, and our great state of Mississippi.
