Updates to Student Handbook

South Pike School District

Updates to the Student Handbook 2023-2024

Dress Code:

No Crocs. Why? Students are not wearing Crocs in sports mode, which makes

them a safety hazard.

No Hoodies. Why? This was already in the handbook but will be enforced. Students put ear pods in their ears, not listening to teachers, and it is hard to identify our students when everyone wears hoodies. Students will not take them off when entering a building. They are reminded repeatedly.

Fighting and Vaping on Campuses: Elementary Level:

The consequences can be retrieved from elementary school administration. This information will be given out during registration.

Secondary Level (7-12 Grades):

The consequences can be retrieved from junior high and high school administration. This information will be given out during registration.

Students that are instigating fights will receive the same consequences as students fighting.

Why? Students come to school to learn not to fight and vape.

Fighting on the Bus:

Any fighting on the bus will result in a minimum of 25 days of suspension off of the bus (all involved). Parents will be responsible to transporting their child to and from school each day. Students that are instigating fights will receive the same consequences as students fighting.

Why? Fighting on the bus distracts bus drivers which could result in fatal accidents to occur.

Taking Pictures/Recording/Posting on Social Media:

No electronic device shall be used to record audio, share video/audio or capture any image of a fight altercation or any other event taking place at school or on the school bus. Such will result in suspension for 3-9 days and up to a 45-day placement in the alternative school. Posting the recordings/images on social media or allowing someone to post them to his or her electronic platform or account will result in like punishment.

Why? Posting obscene pictures or events at the school is a negative outlook on our district and violates the privacy of others.

Grading Scale: The grading scale for K-6 has changed.

90 –100 = A

80 89 = B

75 –  79 = C

70 –  74 = D

0 69 = F

Why? Expectations for lower elementary has increased. This is to better ensure that students are prepared for secondary education.

Attendance: (addition to current policy)

Any student with 3 consecutive unexcused absences will not be allowed to make up work via CANVAS. That student’s access to CANVAS will be turned off. The student must return to school to make up the work.

Why? Students are putting themselves on virtual instruction and not coming to school to receive instruction from teachers. This makes students unprepared for state assessments. This also negatively affects the district’s average daily attendance which decreases school funding.
