Freshman Scholarships for Southern Miss

PRESIDENTIAL NATIONAL MERIT© SCHOLARSHIP

Deadline is based on National Merit progression.

A limited number of students recognized as National Merit Semifinalists and Finalists will qualify for the University-sponsored Presidential National Merit Scholarship, which is designed to cover the cost of attendance for four years. This includes tuition, out-of-state fees (if applicable), room, board, and a book stipend (approximately $43,000 for in-state students). Consideration is based on Finalists having listed The University of Southern Mississippi as their first choice institution with the National Merit Corporation as well has having been admitted to the University and to the Honors College. Students who progress to Finalist status will further receive a $4,000 study abroad scholarship to participate in the University study abroad program of their choice, with the potential to also receive a new laptop computer. These scholarship recipients are automatically members of the Presidential Scholar class, which is the highest designation a student can receive at the University. (This scholarship precludes any other University scholarship.)

Valedictorian/Salutatorian Scholarship

Verification of valedictorian/salutatorian status must be received by June 15.

A one-time award of $1,000 is available for first-time entering students who are officially designated as their high school's valedictorian ($500 for salutatorians). A letter of verification from a high school principal, counselor, or other official must be received by June 15.

MTAG

Mississippi Resident Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG)

In 1995, the Mississippi Legislature established the Mississippi Resident Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG) which offers financial aid assistance to Mississippi residents attending state approved public and nonprofit two-year and four-year eligible colleges and universities.  The primary objective of the MTAG is to provide educational opportunities for students who wish to pursue post-secondary education in the state.

Application Deadline:  September 15th

*Deadline was September 15, 2007.  However, students can still apply.

Available to the student who:

  • Meets all eligibility requirements by the designated deadline date
  • Is a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior.  Students working on a second vocational certificate, second associate's degree, second bachelor's degree, graduate degree or professional degree are not eligible.
  • Is a resident of Mississippi for one year prior to enrollment in college and provides MTAG supporting documents
  • Is accepted and enrolled full-time in undergraduate course work at one eligible Mississippi college or university.  Full-time enrollment is defined as the completion of twelve semester credit hours or nine trimester credit hours of undergraduate course work.  Audits are not counted as enrolled or completed hours.
  • Receives less than the full Federal Pell Grant as determined by the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).  Our office uses the latest version of the results of the process FAFSA to determine an applicant's Pell Grant eligibility.
  • Does not receive any combination of student financial aid, including MTAG, in excess of cost of attendance or financial need as established by the institution.
  • Completes the online web application and has all supporting documents on file with the Mississippi Office of Student Financial Aid by the deadline date of September 15th

High School senior applicants must meet the general requirements listed above and these academic requirements:

  • Have achieved a cumulative 2.5 high school grade point average on a 4.00 scale after a minimum of seven semesters.
  • Have scored a minimum of 15 on the ACT.  Scores resulting from the national testing of the ACT are the only accepted scores for state eligibility.  Residual test scores are not acceptable.
  • A minimum score of 720 on the SAT I test may be substituted for the ACT test score.

Home School applicants with less than 12 college hours must meet the general requirements listed above and these academic requirements:

  • Submit a home school transcript showing the course work that corresponds to that of a high school graduate for the ninth through twelfth grades
  • Have scored a minimum of 15 on the ACT.  Scores resulting from the national testing of the ACT are the only accepted scores for state eligibility.  Residual test scores are not acceptable.
  • A minimum score of 720 on the SAT I test may be substituted for the ACT test score.
