In Kijita (Wajita) Africa there is a proverb which says 'Omwana ni wa
bhone,' meaning regardless of a child's biological parent(s), its
upbringing belongs to the community. As a school counselor, I have discovered that each day a child comes to school, he/she brings more than books, paper, crayons and pencils with them. Every child brings his/her own personal experiences, cultural influences, family heritages, and needs. With that in mind, I am aware that every child comes to school with the potential to learn and teach. Therefore, my job as a school counselor, is one of bringing the community, school and child together, so that life long learning can occur for everyone! As the new school counselor at Eva Gordon, I will strive to help every student reach his/her highest level of academic success. I will also work with the student's parents, caregivers, teachers and community to assure each student's needs, experiences, heritages and cultural influences are considered. In order to achieve these stated goals, the counseling services of Eva Gordon will include the following: individual therapy; group counseling; community liaison services; MCT testing; Teacher Support Teams (TST); test taking and study skills training; school discipline; crisis intervention; and character education classes. Some of the components of the character education classes will include, but are not limited to, the following virtues: respect, responsibility, honesty, cooperation, perseverance, acceptance, gratitude, friendship and self-discipline. I am excited about
this new school year!! |
