The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program provides children in elementary schools with a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables in the afternoon as a healthy snack. It is an effective and creative way of introducing fresh fruits and vegetables to the students. The FFVP also encourages schools to develop partnerships at the State and local levels for support in implementing and operating the program. Students will receive the fresh fruit or vegetable snack three times a week.
The goal of the FFVP is to create a healthier school environment by providing healthier food choices by:
- Expanding the variety of available fruits and vegetables
- Increasing children's fruit and vegetable consumption
- Making a difference in children's diets to impact their present and future health
- Introduce children to a variety of produce that they otherwise might not have had the opportunity to sample
